In China stainless steel 201 is one of the cheapest stainless steels. The main advantage is low nickel content. Because it has less nickel, the price is about 60% of Stainless Steel 304, but the corrosion resistance is slightly lower. Thickness 0.1 to 6 mm. Strip width 100 to 1,000 mm. Coil width 600 to 2,000 mm. Cut-to-length. Surface finishes 2B surface finish BA surface finish 8K mirror finish Matting Mirror polished Matte Embossed This makes it the most economical choice for applications with low corrosion resistance requirements such as interior design, kitchen appliances and hardware fittings.

201 is a stainless steel that is less expensive due to its lower nickel content. The price is only around 60% of 304 stainless steel because of the lower nickel content, and it lowers costs. It is suitable for most applications where corrosion resistance requirements are not exacting, such as interior finishes, kitchen appliances and hardware fittings. It is harder and more resistant to wear than 304 stainless steel, but should not be used in highly corrosive environments.

Performance Characteristics

The defining characteristic that separates 201 stainless steel from other stainless steels is nickel. 304 stainless steel has approximately 8% nickel. Stainless steel 201 has a lowered nickel content of 3.5-5.5% and the balance is composed of manganese and nitrogen. This naturally reduces the price with lower nickel content. The price of 201 stainless steel is only about 60% of the price of 304 stainless steel, this price difference becomes quite noticeable in case of buying in large quantities. It possesses high hardness and good wear resistance . It is sufficiently corrosion resistant for normal indoor environments and the surface is smooth and attractive. Machinability is good also. stamping, bending and press forming are possible which facilitate the processing of formed parts. The weldability is suitable for normal application.

But one thing is clear: it is only limited in its corrosion resistance. Suitable for mildly corrosive atmospheres but not for wave action, salt spray or strong acids and alkalis. For these applications you’ll need either grade 304 or grade 316 Stainless Steel. Before you choose 201 stainless steel, consider the application environment. In highly corrosive environment you should not use different materials to save costs. Cold Rolled, Hot rolled full dimensions are available in three forms stainless steel strip, stainless steel coil and stainless steel sheet. The surface treatment is extensive and can be adapted to the individual customer requirements.

کاربردها

Grade 201 is mainly used for indoor and low corrosion environment. Ideal for cost sensitive, non-environmentally critical applications.

  • curtain wall, interior partition, suspended ceiling for buildings
  • Interior finishing: stainless steel doors and windows, partition walls, railings, etc.
  • Kitchen fittings: kitchen appliances, kitchen sink, cabinet door handles, hardware fittings
  • Furniture frames – dining table frames, dining chairs, sofas etc.
  • Enclosures, mounts and pipe hangers for industrial equipment
  • automotive interior mouldings, protective devices and decorative parts for automotive vehicles

Properties of Manufacturing

Grade 201 is easy to work and can be produced by stamping, bending and press forming. It is harder than 304 grade, very wear resistant and holds its shape after forming. This is sufficient for welding by the usual methods. Both hot and cold rolling are possible. All three stripforms are available. Please specify surface requirements and dimensions. If further processing is needed, please let us know in advance. We will produce according to your requirements.

Packing & Shipping

The seaworthy export packing is resistant to seawater, moisture and shocks, so that no damage occurs even on long transport routes. Transport is by container, bulk carrier or rail. The shipping method depends on the delivery location.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What is the difference between 201 and 304?

A: The difference is the nickel content. 304 is ~8% nickel; 201 is 3.5-5.5% nickel. Cost is only approximately 60% that of 304. Less nickel means less corrosion resistance. 201 is good for mildly corrosive environments, but 304 is better for highly corrosive environments.

Q: Does 201 corrode?

A: This is contingent upon the context. It is not a problem in dry indoor environments and mild corrosion conditions. Problems can result from long term exposure to seawater, salt spray, or strong acids and alkalis. So determine the application first and then decide the material.

Q: Is 201 suitable for decorative use?

A: Yeah. Available in various finishes: 2B surface finish, BA surface finish, 8K mirror finish, brushed, mirror polished, matte, embossed. The finish is nice, the price is low, and it’s used a lot in interior design.

Q: What is the specification range?

A: The thickness ranges from 0.1 to 6 mm, the strip width from 100 to 1,000 mm and the roll width from 600 to 2,000 mm. Cut to length. The material is available as stainless steel coil, stainless steel strip or stainless steel sheet.

Q: Can 201 be treated further?

A: Yes. We do all stamping, bending and press forming and can do welding work as well if required. When you submit your order, please let us know your processing requirements.

Q: How do I choose between 201 and 304?

A: Two things to consider, one is the environment and the other is your budget. 201 is a low-cost option for corrosion resistant indoor applications when on a tight budget. If you are in highly corrosive environments like coastal areas, salt fog, and the chemical industry, do not try to save 40% – go straight for 304.
